Netflix Introduces Rs199/month plan in India to take on Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar and others .

Netflix has finally launched a plan that might get a huge chunk of Indians to subscribe to its platform and expand its user base . Netflix recently announced its quarterly earnings and added only 2.7 million additional subscribers as against the 5 million additional subscribers that was forecasted by the experts . Netflix is looking on to new markets with significant consumers such as India to expand its global footprint . Pricing has been the severe cause for Netflix’s low subscription numbers in India .

Netflix charged a minimum Rs 499/month for its basic plan that went upwards of Rs 799/month for a premium plan . On the other hand , Amazon Prime offers its users free delivery on its products, free video streaming and free music streaming all in at Rs 999/year and Rs 129/month . Hotstar charges Rs 999/year and Rs 299/month for all its premium content .

The Rs 199/month Plan :

The Rs 199/month plan is exclusively for smartphone and tablet users . The plan can be accessed on one smartphone or tablet at a time . The plan would stream at Standard defination ( 480p ) and HD and Ultra HD quality would not be available . The plan would also not allow the user to watch the content on laptop or TV . Netflix was testing this plan for a long time and finally this has come into existence . The plan is available only for Indian users and targeted specifically at Indian users . Netflix currently holds about 151 million paid subscriptions worldwide and a number of those new subscriptions come from developing markets .

This plan should significantly change the dynamics of the game for Netflix as more and more users who were not able to afford Netflix would probably join the network and become loyal subscribers . Netflix is focusing on getting new users onboard and this plan should do that and will increase competition .
